Colleges and universities in Canada are distinct in terms of the types of degrees they can grant their graduates. Colleges can offer business diplomas, but only accredited universities can offer MBA degrees. MBA programs at universities in Canada can be judged on a number of criteria including faculty size, research and publications, curriculum content and the employment and salary rates of recent graduates. Canadian MBA programs are included in global rankings produced by Forbes, the Economist and London's Financial Times. The Financial Times' annual international rankings of MBA programs is especially well respected for its objectivity and ranking content.

Rotman MBA

  • The Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto is long established. Today, the school prides itself on its "integrative thinking" approach, which focuses students' attention on the relationships between various business disciplines. Graduates can choose between a full-time, two-year MBA or a part-time, three-year MBA; senior managers can enroll for a one-year Executive MBA or the "OMNI Global" Executive MBA, which involves travel and study in eight business centers in six countries. Successful applicants for the MBA program will have an undergraduate degree with a minimum B average or 3.0 GPA in their last year of study, two years of work experience and two strong professional references. GMAT scores for the 2011 class ranged from 550 to 780. The total two-year tuition for Canadian students in 2010 is $74,936; the two-year Rotman MBA will cost international students $94,286. The Rotman MBA was ranked 45th globally by the Financial Times in 2010, which was the top spot among Canadian universities.

  • Richard Ivey MBA

  • The Richard Ivey School of Business is located at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. Its MBA program has been ranked 49th globally by the Financial Times, which makes it the second-highest-ranked Canadian business program. Ivey is known for its development and deployment of the case studies method of learning, whereby students are exposed to well-researched, real-life business situations and asked to diagnose problems, suggest solutions and develop plans of action. A one-year MBA and an Executive MBA is offered, and courses for the latter degree are offered at centers in Toronto and Hong Kong. Admission requirements include two years of work experience, demonstrated leadership skills and three professional references.   • The Schulich School of Business at York University in Toronto is known for international business programs that integrate language training and real-world experiences abroad into the curriculum. Sixteen-month MBA programs and 20-month International MBA programs are offered. Campuses are located in North York and downtown Toronto, and the school operates satellite centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Mumbai, Seoul and Moscow. Admission requirements include two years of relevant work experience, a B+ average in the final two years of an undergraduate degree and an "acceptable" GMAT score. Tuition fees for three terms of full-time study are $35,712 for Canadians and $45,000 for international students. Schulich's MBA program was ranked 54th globally by the Financial Times.

  • The Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia offers a 15-month, full-time MBA and a 20-month, part-time International MBA. The International MBA involves study at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China. The school also offers an 18-month Executive MBA in health care and it is open to suggestions for custom programs built around specific organizational needs. Acceptance to the MBA program at Sauder is competitive, and qualifications include the following: a four-year bachelor's degree with a minimum B+ average or 3.3 GPA; a GMAT score of 630 to 640; and five to six years of work experience. Applicants are assessed through resumes, interviews, online essays and reference checks. Tuition fees for the 2010 academic year are $41,541 for Canadian and international students. Sauder's MBA ranked 82nd in the world in 2010, according to the Financial Times.
